Experienced Finance Director welcomed

Chris Cowling, Finance Director at ADE Power, has become the latest business representative to join the Langthwaite Business Association Board of Directors.

Chris was officially appointed as a Director on 12 January 2026. He brings a strong combination of financial leadership, commercial experience and in‑depth knowledge of the energy and manufacturing sectors to the Board.

Chris is currently Finance Director at ADE Power, based at Unit 14, Langthwaite Business Park, where he is responsible for financial strategy, governance and supporting the continued growth of the business.

He joined ADE Power in 2025, having previously held senior commercial and finance leadership roles within the renewable energy sector, most recently as Commercial Director at Ineco Energy Ltd. His background includes extensive experience working with UK manufacturers and infrastructure‑focused businesses on energy, investment and growth strategies.

Chris holds an MBA from Durham University Business School and is a qualified Chartered Accountant. He is also an active contributor to wider industry discussions around UK manufacturing, energy resilience and decarbonisation.

Commenting on his appointment, Chris said: “I’m really pleased to be joining the Langthwaite Business Association Board. The business park plays an important role in the local economy, and I’m looking forward to working with fellow Board members to support collaboration, investment and a strong, secure environment for businesses operating on the park.”

How employment laws are changing from April

Are you aware of how it might affect you?

Most business owners know that employment law reforms will come into force from April 2026. And if you haven’t had time to grasp what’s going to happen, know is the time to find out.

For businesses, particularly SMEs without dedicated HR teams, it’s essential to understand what is changing and how to prepare.

From April 2026, several significant employment law reforms will come into force across the UK as part of the government’s wider reforms to workplace rights under the Employment Rights Act 2025.

These changes are designed to strengthen employee protections and modernise workplace practices, but they will also bring new responsibilities for employers.

To help, we briefly outline the key changes taking effect from April 2026 and what they mean for employers below.

Day-one rights to paternity and parental leave

One of the most notable changes is the introduction of “day-one” rights to paternity leave and unpaid parental leave.

Employees must complete a qualifying period before they can access these rights right now.

But from 6 April 2026, employees will be entitled to paternity leave and unpaid parental leave from the first day of their employment. The Employment Rights Act 2025 removes the previous qualifying periods of 26 weeks for paternity leave and one year for unpaid parental leave.

Employers should make sure that policies, employee handbooks, and HR processes reflect these updated eligibility rules.

Changes to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP)

Statutory Sick Pay will also undergo significant reform. From April 2026:

SSP will be payable from the first day of sickness, rather than after the current three-day waiting period.
The lower earnings limit will be removed, meaning more low-paid workers will qualify for sick pay.

This may increase the number of employees eligible for sick pay and that could mean absence-related costs increase slightly. Employers should review absence management procedures and ensure payroll systems are updated accordingly.

Bereaved partner’s paternity leave

Another important addition is Bereaved Partner’s Paternity Leave. From April 2026, if the mother or primary adopter of a child dies within the child’s first year, the surviving partner will be entitled to take up to 52 weeks of paternity leave.

While such situations are fortunately rare, employers should ensure they understand the new entitlement. You should be prepared to support affected employees with compassion and clear procedures.

Increased penalties for collective redundancy breaches

Employers undertaking large-scale redundancies will face stricter consequences if consultation rules are not followed.

From April 2026, the maximum protective award for failing to properly consult employees during collective redundancy processes will double from 90 days’ pay to 180 days’ pay per affected employee.

This significantly raises the financial risk for organisations that do not comply with collective consultation requirements. Businesses considering restructures should ensure they follow correct legal procedures and seek professional advice early.

Stronger whistleblowing protections

Employment law will also expand whistleblowing protections. While every business hopes that everyone works respectively, disclosures relating to sexual harassment will be treated as a qualifying whistleblowing disclosure from April.

This means workers who report sexual harassment will be protected from detriment or unfair dismissal under whistleblowing legislation.

Employers should review internal reporting policies and reinforce workplace training to ensure concerns can be raised safely and appropriately.

New ‘Fair Work Agency’

A new enforcement body, the Fair Work Agency, will be established from April 2026. The organisation will bring together several existing enforcement functions and will be responsible for monitoring compliance with employment rights such as statutory sick pay and holiday pay.

For businesses, this signals a stronger focus on enforcement, meaning compliance with employment law will be under greater scrutiny.

Preparing your business

While many of these changes aim to improve fairness and support employees, they will require businesses to review their HR policies, employment contracts and internal procedures.

Failing to fully understand the changes or adapt, could mean costly legal problems. Saying you were unaware will not be considered a defence.

Key steps employers should consider include:

Updating employee handbooks and leave policies
Reviewing absence management procedures
Training managers on new family leave rights
Ensuring redundancy processes meet consultation requirements
Reviewing whistleblowing and harassment reporting policies

Why you need to get ahead

The employment law reforms coming into force in April 2026 represent one of the most significant shifts in workplace rights in recent years.

These changes may require adjustments, but businesses can look at them as a way to strengthen workplace culture, improve compliance and demonstrate commitment to employee well-being.

The Budget: What business owners need to know

We look at the main points to affect businesses

Beyond all the headlines and political debate, Budgets always have measures that were not the focus of the main announcement.

So, we have chosen the most important points that business owners need to know.

National Living Wage: This will rise by 50p (4.1%) to £12.71 per hour from April 2026 for employees aged 21 and over. At the same time, the rate for 18-20 year olds will rise 8.5 per cent to £10.85 per hour.
Dividends and savings tax: For business owners who pay themselves in dividends, the tax rate will increase by two percentage points from April 2026.
Business rates: Permanent lower business rates tax rates for over 750,000 retail, hospitality and leisure properties from April 2026. A £4.3 billion business rates support package will cap business rates bill increases for sectors hit hardest by revaluations from April 2026.
Film studios: Business rate relief of 40% for film studios will remain until 2034
Income Tax: The thresholds at which the different bands of Income Tax kick in will be frozen for a further three years from 2028 to 2031.
Rental income: Tax on rental income will go up two percentage points from April 2027.
Pensions: National Insurance will be applied to employer and employee salary-sacrifice pension contributions above £2,000 per year from 2029.
Low value import relief: Customs arrangements that allowed some online retailers to import their goods duty free will be closed, ensuring all businesses pay equivalent tariffs. That means customs duty will apply to parcels of any value entering the UK from overseas from 2029.
E-invoicing: The Government will require the use of electronic invoicing for all VAT invoices for business-to-business and business-to-government transactions from 2029.
Electric vehicles: A new 3p per mile tax will be added to electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid cars from 2028, in addition to existing road taxes.
Fuel duty: A 5p temporary cut in fuel duty on petrol and diesel will be extended to September 2026, after which the duty will rise again over a six month period.
Electric Vehicle support: Support for the EV transition and 10 year 100% business rates relief for eligible change-points and EV-only forecourts. There will be a one year extension to the 100% first year allowances for businesses buying zero emission cars and charge-point infrastructure to April 2027.
Tourism tax: Elected mayors in England will be given powers to levy a ‘tourist tax’ on visitors to the area who stay overnight.
Investment allowances: There will be a permanent 40% First Year Allowance for main rate assets. The £1 million Annual Investment Allowance offers that give immediate tax relief on plant and machinery equipment is being kept.
Enterprise tax incentives: Doubling eligibility for enterprise tax incentives.
Apprenticeships: Training for apprentices under the age of 25 will be free for SMEs in England.
Pensions: National Insurance will be applied to employer and employee salary-sacrifice pension contributions above £2,000 per year from 2029.
Corporation Tax: This will remain at its current rate of 25 per cent.
Capital Gains Tax Relief: The government will reduce the Capital Gains Tax relief available on qualifying disposals to Employee Ownership Trusts from 100% of the gain to 50%. This takes immediate effect.
Enterprise Management Incentive (EMI) regime: EMI options are intended to help smaller companies with growth potential to recruit and retain the best employees. Currently, it is only available to companies with up to 250 employees. From April 2026, it will increase to 500 employees.

Levy Payers vote to renew the BID for another 5 years

The results of the Langthwaite BID Renewal Ballot are in and BID Levy Payers have voted "YES" to renew the BID for another 5 years (1st April 2026 to 31st March 2031).

The Yes vote ensures that we (the LBA) continue to maintain and deliver the services and projects for businesses that were identified under the four objectives in the business plan and prospectus.

Toni Crooks, Chair of the LBA said: "On behalf of the LBA, I would like thank all Levy Payers who voted, completed questionnaires, attended meetings, workshops and contributed to the development and shaping of the business plan for the next five years.

"I would also like to thank the LBA Board who voluntarily put their time and valuable experience into the BID renewal process and RCP21 for their excellent support and assistance."

Of those votes cast and counted:

95.8% voted in favour by number of levy payers

99.7 % voted in favour by rateable value

Langthwaite BID Renewal 2026 – 2031 - Ballot Papers & Process

All you need to know about the BID ballot

You should have all now received your ballot papers, which were despatched by CIVICA on 1st October 2025. The ballot will run until 31st October 2025.

Wakefield Council has appointed the Independent Scrutineer, Civica Election Services (CES) of 33 Clarendon Road, London N8 0NW to conduct the ballot. The ballot is run entirely by post. Ballot Papers have been sent to those eligible to vote on Wednesday 1 October 2025 to be returned to CES by no later than 5pm on Friday 31 October 2025 (the “day of the ballot”).

Please find below information relating to the Ballot Process.

Lost Ballot Papers / What to do if you do not receive your ballot paper?

Ballot Papers were despatched on Wednesday 1 October 2025. If you have not received your ballot paper in the week after this date, please apply for a replacement ballot paper. CES can provide a replacement request form to aid the process of requesting a replacement and providing all the necessary information.

You may apply to CES for a replacement paper by supplying ONE of the following:

a) An email sent from a business account including a company email signature; or

b) A letter in hard copy form along with the appropriate ‘evidence of identity’; or

c) A scan of both the letter and the ‘evidence of identity’ attached to an email.

Any email requests should be sent to bids.UK@civica.com. Hard Copy requests should be addressed to The Independent Scrutineer, Civica Election Services, The Election Centre, 33 Clarendon Road, London N8 0NW.

Hard copy requests must be signed by the Eligible Voter and evidence of the voter’s identity must be provided in the form of ONE of the following:

a) A signed Letterhead for the appropriate company;

b) or A signed photocopy of the National Non-Domestic Rating Bill for the hereditament;

c) or A signed photocopy of an item of personal ID such as a Passport or Driving Licence.

Please do not send original copies of ID or Bills.

Very Important – Please Note: - CES will issue any replacements that match the requirements detailed above from the replacement deadline on Monday 27 October 2025. They cannot do so before that date due to the legislation. The ballot closes at 5pm on the 31st of October 2025, so please make sure that you return your ballot paper as soon as possible to enable CES to receive it before the deadline of 5pm on the 31st of October 2025.

Appointing a Proxy

Persons eligible to vote in the BID ballot may appoint someone else to vote on their behalf (for example, if they are going to be away at the time of the ballot).

Applications to appoint a proxy must be submitted to Civica Election Services (CES) at the above address no later than 5pm on Tuesday 21 October 2025.

An application for the appointment of a proxy must be made in writing and:

a) state the full name and address of the person whom the person entitled to vote (the applicant) wishes to appoint as a proxy;

b) state the address(es) of the applicant’s hereditament or hereditaments;

c) be signed by the applicant;

d) and contain a statement by the applicant that the proxy so named has been consulted and is capable and willing to be appointed.

A proxy appointment may be cancelled by notifying CES at the above address no later than 5pm on Sunday 26 October 2025

Spoilt Ballot Papers

If you inadvertently spoil your ballot paper in such a manner that it cannot be conveniently used as a ballot paper, please return it to CES (address above). On receipt of the spoilt ballot paper, CES will issue a replacement. No replacements can be issued if the spoilt ballot paper is received by CES later than three working days before the day of the ballot.

Count of Ballot Papers

Ballot papers will be counted on Monday 3 November 2025, and the result of the ballot will be announced shortly after.

For a BID ballot to be successful there must be a majority of those voting in favour of the proposal, and those voting in favour must represent a majority of the aggregate rateable value of the hereditaments voting.

Rejected Ballot Papers

If a ballot paper is duplicated and two are returned bearing the same number or barcode both will be void and not counted. Any ballot papers that are returned unsigned, unmarked or that are void for uncertainty will also be void and not counted.

Declaring the result

The ballot result will declare:

a) the total number of valid votes cast;

b) the total aggregate rateable value of valid votes cast;

c) the total number of valid votes cast in favour of the BID;

d) the total aggregate rateable value of valid votes in favour of the BID;

e) and if applicable, the total number of ballot papers rejected.

For the BID Ballot to be successful there must be:

i. A majority in favour of the BID in the number of those voting;

ii. and A majority in favour of the BID in the proportion of rateable value of those voting.

Production Park to host the Semi-Final and Final of The Voice UK

Park business to host iconic ITV show

Production Park have been chosen as the filming location for the semi-final and final of The Voice UK – one of ITV’s most iconic and beloved entertainment shows.

Lifted Entertainment (ITV Studios) will record the climactic episodes of one of ITV’s biggest entertainment shows at Production Park in October this year, in front of an audience of around 500 people. The set will be built in Studio 005, with Studio 001 also being used as a main production area.

The semi-final will take place on Sunday 5th October 2025 and you can apply for free tickets to be part of the audience via SRO Audiences.

Toni Crooks re-elected to the Board

The quorate LBA AGM took place on Thursday 18th September 2025 in Production Park's Studio 005. Toni Crooks, Chair of the LBA welcomed all those present to the meeting and ran through the proceedings for the AGM.

Toni Crooks, Crooks Haulage retired by rotation and stood for re-election. Toni was re-elected to the Board of the LBA.

Sanders Partnership
Marie Szczepanski of Sanders Partnership presented and reported on the company accounts.

Marie gave a breakdown and an explanation of the accounts for the year ending 31 ^st March 2025. The report and accounts as approved by the LBA Board were considered and noted.

Progress Report
Nicola Parker gave a presentation outlining the services delivered on Langthwaite Business Park through the BID during the year.

BID Renewal 2026 - 2031
Karen Harrison presented information regarding the Renewal of the Langthwaite BID, including the key findings from the survey that was undertaken earlier this year, identifying the key objectives for the next five years and providing information regarding how much businesses will pay in 2026 / 2027.

Chin Chin! Raise a glass to brewery open weekend

Family-friendly event on July 25 & 26

Langthwaite Business Park’s very own brewery will be throwing open its doors and serving a selection of its real ales during a special open weekend.

Chin Chin Brewing Company is hosting the family-friendly (and dog) event on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 July.

A handful of guest keg beers will also be available along with ciders, wine, soft drinks and tea and coffee.

There will also be food from Tiny Idea will serve up a Lebanese Fusion Kebab menu on the Friday.

Saturday’s food choice will be smash burgers from The Burger Van.

Children are welcome. But remember that as a working brewery, they must be accompanied at all times.

Filming for new Park promotional video starts

Park businesses highlighted

Filming and photography of businesses on Langthwaite Business Park was completed in mid-June.

We were blessed with lots of sunshine for the filming and photography. A drone was used to capture aerial shots of the park, including the Enterprise Zone, whilst the film crew and photographer visited a variety of businesses on our park.

Thank you to all the businesses that took part in the interviews and photographs.

The video will highlight a cross section of our businesses and will have a one-minute overview of the park and a longer three-minute version.

The next stage will be for the video to be edited with the intention of officially launching the new video mid-July 2025. Once launched, the video will be available for all businesses to use on their websites and social media channels.

Haulage firm comes to 'rescue' of fire service

Lockwood Haulage donates trailer

A Langthwaite Business Park haulage company has come to the aid of Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service.

Lockwood Group donated one of its old trailers, to the Derbyshire Training Centre for Heavy Lifting Training.

The trailer was provided to the Joint Training Centre in Ripley, where technical rescue instructor Richard will use it to teach heavy and ultra-heavy vehicle rescue techniques.

It was handed to the service by business development manager Gemma Gregory and Class One driver Martin.

This training covers crucial skills such as managing trailer-related incidents and safely lifting trailers involved in road traffic collisions.

It’s essential that the fire and rescue service’s heavy vehicle collision rescue crews receive top-level training.

It ensures that, in an emergency, drivers know expert assistance is on the way.

Academy of Live Technology offers FREE 3D printing and scanning course

Tech course for adults

The Academy of Live Technology – located here on Langthwaite Business Park – is offering a FREE two-day training course on 3D Printing and Scanning Technologies.

The course will take place over two days on Friday 21st February and Saturday 22nd February 2025 at Production Park and is fully funded. Please note, there are additional dates in March also available.

Good progress being made

Update Provided by West Yorkshire Combined Authority

West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) are making good progress with the phase 1 infrastructure works at Langthwaite Enterprise Zone which is anticipated to complete ahead of programme by Spring 2025.

For phase 2, WYCA has commissioned Cushman & Wakefield (C&W) property consultants who have been previously engaged on phase 1 to look at various options and make recommendations on how to progress the delivery of the site. This work will be completed by the end of February and will be used to inform WYCA’s internal decision-making process to select the optimal delivery model for the site.

WYCA is asking interested parties, who are looking to grow, to complete a short questionnaire to assist with the market assessment currently underway. The purpose of the questionnaire is to capture up to date additional growth/expansion requirements locally.

Campus to grow with significant investment

Production Park, the industry-leading hub where global tours are rehearsed and productions brought to life, is making its most significant investment yet with a major expansion of its facilities at Langthwaite Business Park.

By 2025, the campus will grow to a remarkable 145,000 square feet of state-of-the-art studio space, solidifying its position as the largest production studio campus in the North of England.

This expansion reflects the increasing demand for cutting-edge production spaces and underscores Production Park ’s commitment to fostering innovation across the creative industries. The newly acquired space will include four additional production studios tailored for live music and film, as well as expanded facilities for education and collaboration with supply chain partners.

Warehouse property firm undergoes restructure

New core team at Onward Holdings Ltd

A commercial property company that has warehousing on Langthwaite Business Park has undergone a restructure.

Onward Holdings Ltd , which owns and manages a series of industrial properties across Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, has a new core team.

It is the first major restructure since 1961, when the founder, Bill Storey, died. His four children took control of the business.

Two of the four families have now retired from Onward Holdings Ltd.

The new core team consists of third and fourth generation members from Ken Storey and Valerie Bloomer's families.

A statement from the company said, “Neil Storey and Stephen Bloomer are pleased to be bringing forward Will Storey and Kieren Bloomer into leadership roles alongside our valued colleague Gavin Parkin FCA, who now assumes the position of Finance Director.

“Martin Holden FCCA, Partner at Saffery, will continue his role as Chairman. Alongside our professional advisors Andrew Miller MRICS and Alastair Plant MRICS the new team will continue to innovate in new build developments, acquisition of sites for redevelopment, and continue to invest in our 3pl warehousing, now concentrated on our Castleford facility, the team there ably led by Paul Williamson.

ADE meets Ukraine client's urgent need

Generator gives backup power to MRI facility

Langthwaite Business Park company ADE has helped one of its clients play a pivotal role in Ukraine’s healthcare sector.

Their client, an MRI scanning facility in the country, offers critical diagnostic services to a large number of patients. They faced an urgent need for a dependable backup power source. As a key establishment within the local healthcare ecosystem, the ability to maintain continuous operation is essential.

ADE’s solution was to provide an ADE Perkins 110 kVA Silent Diesel Generator, which was available immediately from its stock genset range, facilitating its client's requirement for a fast turnaround.

The result was a robust and reliable critical emergency backup power system, ensuring patient safety and operational continuity in the event of mains power failures.

THE SITUATION

The facility recognised the inherent risk posed by potential mains power failures. Such disruptions could lead not only to significant delays in patient care but also to potential damage to sensitive and expensive MRI equipment. Given the impact of unexpected power loss, the facility needed a swift solution: a robust, reliable emergency standby diesel generator capable of ensuring consistent power supply during outages.

THE SOLUTION

Faced with the critical and immediate need for a power solution, a team of experienced generator sales engineers from ADE stepped up. They determined that a generator sized at 110 kVA (88 kW) would be optimal to meet the facility's requirements.

The company, off Langthwaite Road, provided a detailed assessment of suitable generator sets, leading the client to select the ADE AP110D5.

THE RESULTS

ADE’s client successfully oversaw shipping and delivery of the generator to the MRI scanning facility in Ukraine, where it was installed and commissioned by a local engineer.

Upon testing, it performed perfectly, confirming its capability to deliver consistent emergency standby power when needed. Now, the facility boasts a reliable source of backup power, safeguarding both patients and essential MRI equipment. This setup has become critical in maintaining service continuity and enhancing patient safety amid unexpected power outages.

This project is a prime example of how critical high-quality diesel generators are in solving urgent power challenges. The swift supply of this ADE generator ensured the Ukrainian MRI facility could maintain its crucial services without disruption.

Gas main works: details of temporary roadworks

Work will commence on 21 October to 31 December 2024

The Langthwaite Business Association has been informed by CMU Infrastructure that they will be starting new Gas Main installation works on the park. The work will affect Onward Way, Langthwaite Road and Lidgate Crescent.

The work will commence on Monday 21st October 2024 and is expected to be completed on / around 13th December 2024.

Temporary traffic lights will be in use on different parts of the road whilst the work is on-going. The traffic lights will be staffed during peak hours.

The quorate AGM for Langthwaite Business Park took place on Thursday 10 ^th October 2024 at Production Park.

The quorate LBA AGM took place on Thursday 10 ^th October 2024 in Production Park's Building 005, Studio 004. Toni Crooks, Chair of the LBA welcomed all those present to the meeting and ran through the proceedings for the AGM.

Jim Farmery, Production Park, retired by rotation and stood for re-election. Jim was re-elected to the Board of the LBA. Matt Stevenson, Slide Motorsport, had filled a casual vacancy held by the Board earlier in the year, stood for election, where he was also elected to the Board.

Sanders Partnership, Chartered Accountants

Mr Jan Szczepanski, Director of Sanders Partnership presented and reported on the LBA Annual Accounts. Mr Szczepanski gave a breakdown and an explanation of the accounts for the year ending 31 ^st March 2024. The report and accounts as approved by the LBA Board were considered and noted.

Nicola Parker gave a presentation outlining the activities undertaken on Langthwaite Business Park through the BID during the 12 months starting on 1st September 2024 and ending on 31st August 2024. David Blakelock from The Media Consultancy officially launched the new LBA Website. David provided information about the new website, demonstrated the new business directory and how this links directly to the businesses on the park.

Slide Motorsport owner becomes director on the Langthwaite Business Association Board

Matt Stevenson, Owner of Slide Motorsport, has become the latest business representative to become a director on the Langthwaite Business Association (LBA) Board.

After filling a casual vacancy on the LBA Board earlier this year, Matt stood for election at the recent Annual General Meeting, held on Thursday 10 ^th October 2024, where he was elected to the Board by LBA business members.

Matt brings a wealth of experience, having set up his own successful business Slide Motorsport back in 2010. Matt has been based on Langthwaite Business Park since 2015, when he relocated his business to Units 19A & B on the park.

Matt said: ‘I have been based on Langthwaite Business Park for nearly 10 years, and I have seen the work that has been put into both continuing to develop the park and to maintaining a safe and secure working environment. I am looking forward to working alongside the other Board Members to continue this work.’

DIY Kitchens recently opened a new state of the art kitchen showroom in Unit 25A on the park. The new facility is the largest kitchen showroom in the UK and contains over 60 displays to view.

The two-storey purpose-built showroom covers 25,000 sq ft and opened earlier this year. It is open to the public 7 days a week from 9am to 7pm, Monday to Sunday.

Langthwaite Enterprise Zone

Following Wakefield Council’s Planning and Highways Committee approval in May this year, work has now commenced on the Langthwaite Enterprise Zone.

Contractors, Balfour Beatty began construction work earlier this month (June 2024) to establish a temporary access road from Onward Way into the main site.

The project is split into two phases.

The site is in the ownership of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and the Full Business Case for Phase 1, together with £12.7m funding was approved by the Combined Authority at its meeting in July 2023.

Phase 1 will unlock the enterprise zone, which is 9.45 hectares in size, by delivering an access road constructed to an adoptable standard that connects to the main site. The site will be remediated up to development platform level, creating up to 27,000sqm of potential commercial floor space with an indicative unit size range of between 700 – 9,300 sqm.

An Asset Development Plan for Phase 2 is currently being developed which will inform the future commercial development of the site including the exact type and size of units.
